Overview

In general, any campaign designed to encourage the recipient to make a purchase is considered commercial (this also includes invitations to join a loyalty program). This is important because, as a rule, you can only send commercial messages to opt-in contacts. Sending them to people who have not given their consent is considered sending unsolicited messages—or spam—which you definitely want to avoid.

By contrast, transactional messages are purely informational. They can be used, for example, to confirm a password change or send an order confirmation. Unlike commercial messages, they can be sent to all your contacts, even without prior opt-in.

#1 - Adding variables to your design

Splio gives you a tool, in the form of transactional loops, to present data directly connected not to a contact, but to an order as explained earlier.

Below, you will find some examples of order loops.

.

Recap of products in a ticket loop

{% for orderline in order.orderlines %}
{% assign product = orderline.product %}

Product ID: {{ product.sku }}

Name: {{ product.name }} ({{ product.brand }})
Price: {{ product.price }}

{% endfor %}

.

Explanations:
  1. Splio goes over the loop once for every product in the current order (that is, line in order).

  2. Each time it goes through the loop, data from the product fields (name, brand, price, image) is added to the current message.

.

Exclude products from an order loop

You need to make sure that when you display all products found on an order, you never show certain products.

.

{% for orderline in order.orderlines limit:4 %}
{% assign product = orderline.product %}
{% if product.external_id != "987153" and product.external_id != "777787" and product.external_id != "777781" and product.external_id != "227526" and product.custom_fields['ProductType'] != "box" %}

Product ID: {{ product.sku }}

Name: {{ product.name }} ({{ product.brand }})
Price: {{ product.price }}

{% endif %}
{% endfor %}

.

Explanations:

The instructions to display a product image and its name are enclosed not only in a loop but also between {SPLIO IF} and {SPLIO ENDIF}. Whenever the external ID of the product (“”) equals 987153, 777787, 777781, or 227526, or if the product type (“”) is box, Splio will not display them (because all the negative conditions must be met to display the product).

#2 - Creating the campaign

  1. In Automations, click Create campaign.

  2. Name your campaign and choose a creation mode. Tip: Use a clear, descriptive name to make it easy to find later.

    Depending on the creation method you choose, the steps to follow may differ. If you select a template, you’ll get a preconfigured campaign that you can simply customize. If you start from scratch, follow these steps:

  3. Choose the type of campaign. Select a Trigger Campaign so the message is sent automatically when a user performs a specific action—in this case, abandoning their cart.

  4. Set up the trigger by clicking Edit starting point. A side panel will appear. In the Trigger tab, select Post-purchase as the condition so that contacts enter the campaign when they leave items in their cart.

  5. Right after that, in the same section, determine repeatability. Select how often contacts will enter the campaign: Once, Multiple times (option recommended for this type of campaign) or After exiting.

  6. This last Limit entries (optional). You can set a limit to control how many times a contact can enter the campaign, based on a defined frequency.

  7. If needed, add entry or exit conditions. In the sidebar, two dedicated tabs allow you to define entry or exit criteria more precisely, based on specific behaviors or segments.

  8. Once the Starting point is set up, add one or more Actions by clicking the + button to insert a new step in your scenario. The side panel will then allow you to configure :

    • Set the waiting time: Schedule a delay between the purchase and when the message is sent (e.g., 1 hour after purchase).

    • Choose the channel and design: In the sidebar, under the Design Details tab, select the channel for your campaign (e.g., email) and choose the message design you want to use.

      Configure action settings: In the Action Settings tab, you can define the campaign or action category, as well as the channel type, for email in this case, select Transactional. You can also set up email capping and schedule automatic email expiration.

    • You can also add additional actions: you can assign rewards (e.g., discount coupons), or create a multi-branch campaign with audiences segmented by specific conditions (e.g., cart value, product category) or randomly

  9. Finalize and activate the campaign. Check the entire scenario, test if necessary, then click on Run to activate your abandoned cart campaign.

Our tips to time your campaign well

Data import frequency
  • Through SFTP/Datahub: you will hit your customers the day after. We would recommend scheduling your campaign to start early in the morning (as soon as your customer checks their phone or just after breakfast. 8.00 – 9.30 AM): keep in mind that the start date of your campaigns shall be always after the data has been synced in Splio

  • Through API: you can hit your customers in real-time, right when the event has happened (a few seconds/minutes after they fulfilled a condition or an event)
